About UK Garage.
UK Garage is a London export through and through. Syncopated 2-step bass, shuffled hi-hats, pitched-up vocal hooks, and a tempo around 130 BPM that sits between house and drum & bass without committing to either. It came out of south London pirate radio and west London clubs in the mid-1990s, built on New Jersey house and US R&B run through a very British filter.
Few genres have generated as much as UKG. Grime, UK drill, Afroswing, and dubstep all trace back to it. The independent artists on Droploud honour the original 2-step tradition rather than its commercial revivals. Here the shuffled groove is a precision engineering problem, not a retro costume.

What is 2-step garage?
2-step is the most recognisable UK Garage subgenre, and it comes down to the drums. Instead of a kick on every beat, the kick lands on beat one and the upbeat of beat three, which gives the groove its rolling, staggered feel. It sounds "skippy" next to four-to-the-floor house. That difference unlocked a whole new dance vocabulary when it hit London clubs in the mid-1990s.
How did UK Garage influence other genres?
Grime came straight out of UK Garage: slower tempo, R&B hooks swapped for raw, fast MCing. Dubstep slowed things down further, dropped the pitch-shifting, and built its half-time bass around the Garage drum pattern. UK drill runs a newer variant of the shuffled groove through a trap lens. Afroswing took both the syncopated groove and the R&B vocal feel from Garage's early 2000s peak.
