What is the history of Reggaeton?
Reggaeton emerged in Puerto Rico and Panama in the late 1990s, built on Jamaican dancehall's dembow rhythm, hip-hop's lyrical influence, and Latin Caribbean roots. DJ Playero and DJ Nelson's underground mixtapes established the format. Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina" took it global in 2004. Since then the genre has absorbed trap, R&B, and UK dance influences while keeping the dembow as its structural foundation.

Tainy, Sky, and Ovy On The Drums are the current major-label production tier. Historically, Luny Tunes and Noriega defined the classic sound. The underground scene runs outside those names: independent producers in Puerto Rico, Colombia, Spain, and diaspora communities, all experimenting with the dembow template.
