Psy-Trance is tribal techno filtered through Goa's psychedelic heritage. Offbeat basslines, intricate hi-hat programming, and synth textures stacked until the track stops being a track and becomes an environment. Full-power, hi-tech, forest, and progressive psy are all distinct subsets, each with its own tempo range, synthesis style, and community.
The underground psy catalogue on Droploud covers artists across those subsets, releasing independently rather than through the label system. These producers build for the outdoor festival and free-party context: music for natural acoustics and long listening, not controlled club rooms.

What makes Psy-Trance different from regular trance?
The bassline. Psy-Trance puts the bass note on the upbeat of each bar instead of the downbeat, which gives it that constant forward push. The synthesis is more complex too: layered sequences, alien-sounding leads, and heavy effects processing for psychedelic timbre. It runs faster than standard trance, 140–148 BPM for full-power, slower for progressive psy. The genre grew out of the Goa trance movement of the early 1990s and still lives close to outdoor festival and free-party culture.
What are the main Psy-Trance subgenres?
Full-power psy is the hardest and most relentless, 145–148 BPM with aggressive basslines. Hi-tech pushes above 150 BPM and counts as extreme even inside the scene. Forest psy (also called "darkpsy") is darker and more textured, made for dense outdoor environments. Progressive psy runs 138–140 BPM and puts groove and mood over raw intensity. Morning psy is brighter and more melodic, the sunrise-set sound at outdoor events.
