What is boom-bap hip-hop?
Boom-bap is the classic hip-hop drum pattern: a heavy kick on beats one and three (the "boom"), a snare on two and four (the "bap"), and swinging hi-hats between them. DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Large Professor made it famous in the early 1990s. It is the rhythmic backbone of East Coast hip-hop and still drives the underground and boom-bap revival scenes. Underground hip-hop puts production craft, lyrical density, and cultural authenticity ahead of commercial reach.
