What does EDM mean?
EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music. It is a broad commercial label for the festival-oriented electronic music that went global in the early 2010s through artists like Avicii, David Guetta, and Deadmau5. It is more marketing category than genre, covering big-room house, electro house, progressive house, future bass, and trap-influenced electronic. Underground producers often dodge the label precisely because of those commercial associations.
Is EDM still popular?
The commercial peak was 2012–2016. The festival circuit has shrunk since, and many of the genre's defining labels have changed direction. But the formats themselves (big-room builds, festival-optimised drops, anthemic chord progressions) still sell, and they have been absorbed into mainstream pop production. Independent artists working in the EDM tradition operate outside that commercial machine.
