What are the main Drum & Bass subgenres?
Liquid D&B (also called "liquid funk") is melodic, vocal-heavy, and the most commercially successful subset. Neurofunk goes deep on bass sound design, dark atmosphere, and technical drum programming. Jump-up is high-energy, heavily sidechained, and built for big rooms. Techstep runs harder and more industrial. Rollers keep it minimal and groove-first. Most working producers move across several of these depending on the project.
Where did Drum & Bass originate?
D&B came out of the UK jungle scene of the early 1990s. It evolved from ragga jungle, reggae-influenced samples over breakbeat rhythms, then stripped the vocals back and pushed the tempo up. Labels like Metalheadz, Moving Shadow, and Reinforced shaped the genre's first decade. It has stayed UK-rooted while building strong scenes in Eastern Europe, Brazil, and Australia.
