Afro House runs on percussion. Polyrhythmic drums, spiritual vocals, and deep bass that trace straight back to South African club culture, from Johannesburg to Berlin to Dubai. It shares roots with Amapiano, built on tribal drum patterns adapted for modern dancefloors. The drums are not a backdrop here. What distinguishes Afro House from other house subgenres?
The rhythm section. Afro House swaps or layers the standard four-to-the-floor house kick with polyrhythmic percussion drawn from African musical traditions. The groove ends up more complex and more hypnotic than straight house at the same time. You will also hear vocal layering and call-and-response patterns that come from African church music.
Is Afro House the same as Amapiano?
Related but not the same. Amapiano is a specific South African genre with its own log drum and piano motifs. It runs slower, around 110–115 BPM, with more weight on melody. Afro House runs faster at 120–128 BPM and puts percussion depth first. Plenty of producers work in both formats, which is why people mix them up.
